Welcome to Mrs. Ruehlow's AHS Publish Speaking Class!

This class will combine the use of our textbook, classroom activities, out of class assignments, practice of public speaking skills, viewing of examples in video clips, and some guest presenters (as they are available and as time allows) as students work to establish and improve their own public speaking awareness and skills.

Monday, Nov. 5

  • Introduce Class, Hand Out Syllabus
  • Pass out new textbooks
  • Read chapter 1, Section 1 pp. 2-10 - Building Responsibility
  • In Chapter One, students will:
    • Identify and analyze the ethical and social repsonsibility of communications.
    • Identify elements of the communication process and their functions.
    • Explain the importance of effective communications skills in personal, professional, and social contexts.
    • Recognize the importance and impact of both verbal and nonverbal communication.
  • Communication breakdown activity
  • Assignment (ASN): "Speech Vocabulary" and "Academic Vocabulary" worksheets
  • ASN: Introduce yourself in your first speech in front of class with the "Interesting Interpretations" assignment - Utilize symbols (much like logos). (Handout) Speeches are due in class on Thursday. (Be ready to practice on Wednesday in case we have time in class.)
  • ASN: Read sections 2-3 of Chapter one (pp. 11-18)
  • ASN: Students to read Daily Announcements at start of 2nd block each day of term 4 - Schedule it today! (Post in Room)

Wednesday, Nov. 7 - Continue Chapter One: Building Responsibility (Early Release Day)
  • Finish "Stereotyping" presentations in class.
  • Discuss the impact of stereotyping on society in conjunction with the presentations.
  • final work time and practice with a peer for tomorrow's speech (as time allows)
  • Practice time on speeches for tomorrow?

Thursday, Nov. 8 - FIRST SPEECH: Interesting Interpretations - Introducing Who You Are (with symbols and explanations)
  • Students will present their speeches in class today
  • Assignment Objectives:
    • Students will utlize intrapersonal communication to assess thoughts and feelings about the current school year.
    • Students will utlize symbols to explain these inner thoughts and feelings.
  • Students and teacher will provide positive feedback about what speakers are already doing well in their presentations

Friday, Nov. 9 - Finish Speeches

Monday, Nov. 12 - Chapter Two "Building Confidence"
OBJECTIVES:
  1. Students will recognize the realities of communication aprpehension and how they can appropriately deal with the problem.
  2. Students will realize the value of perception as it applies to confidence in their speaking.

Tuesday, Nov. 13 - Chapter Two "Building Confidence"
